Featured on MsMojo: The 10 Best Netflix Original Shows for Teens (2020)
Line of Events
On an island full of homeless and good-for-nothings, teenager John B recruits his three best friends to search for a legendary treasure tied to his father’s disappearance. Chase Stokes, Madeline Cline, and their group “OBX” co-stars quiz each other on the best lines from their hit Netflix series. Filmed on location in Charleston, South Carolina; was originally planned to film in Wilmington, North Carolina. I love this show, but it can be really frustrating to watch at times.
She doesn’t even look 16
The acting is decent, but as many others have pointed out, the casting is a little ridiculous. The lead actress, who plays a 16-year-old boy, is almost 30. All of the actors playing the teens are too old to play the roles they’re given, and it ruins the immersion for me. Is it really that hard to find decent actors who at least look like they’re the right age for the role?
But this isn’t the main problem
The story is good at a high level, but it’s the details where this show falls apart. All the drama and tension comes from characters doing stupid things. The stupidity ranges from mild to incredibly dense, but it’s always what drives the drama. It’s hard to find likable characters when they’re constantly doing stupid things and never learning or growing.
And it’s not just the teenagers who are stupid
None of the cops follow procedure because if they did the story wouldn’t happen. Every time a character does something smart, it has to be ruined by someone doing something incredibly stupid, because again the story wouldn’t happen. I wish the writers would spend a little more time trying to find different ways to move the story forward, maybe having the antagonists be smart instead of the characters being stupid. I’ve already finished season 2 and I don’t regret watching it.
It’s pretty good, but it could have been a lot better
There’s no need to waste time endlessly scrolling, here’s the full list of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
