One last kumite, one final battle – for the life of his daughter. David Yeung is the son of Bolo Yeung, who played the antagonist Chong Li in Bloodsport (1988), which was the main inspiration for The Last Kumite (2024). I understand that this was a Kickstarter-funded film that wanted to harken back to the 80s style of martial arts films, but this was just bad. Okay, you can’t get the best actors, martial arts stars, but the script/narrative is so basic that it feels like no effort was made. There is nothing about it that even remotely feels like there was any effort. It’s the paint-by-numbers version of a martial arts film that would be good if it were made on a shoestring budget by a studio, but this one was crowdfunded, but so little effort was put into it. It’s not unwatchable, but it’s also just plain bad, even for “this” type of film.
